Please advise me a good on-line FREE anylitical tool for virus detection.
I need to check out my system ASAP (Windows Vista). I have McAffee installed but not overly happy and feel i might have something this program has not picked up.
Thanks, Doug [ December 30, 2009, 03:53 PM: Message edited by: jamied40 ]

Adware, Spybot are good for the spyware. Most internet service providers now also have very good virus protection software. Just do a simple google search for free virus protection and you should get multiple hits as well...

I've been using Webroot for the past 3 years and have not had 1 single problem to date. And the 1st time I used it, it cleared up my majorly messed up desk top that I had Norton installed on.
I tried Norton and McCafee, both stunk.
webroot can be purchased right from their site.

McAfee sucks...and Vista too...
I've been using AVG for years without any issues/problems...
free.avg.com
For the operating system, I use Windows XP, and since boxing day (got an incredible deal on a laptop), Windows 7.
Good Luck!

Your best bet is to use Malwarebytes or Spyware Doctor along with a regular Anti Virus like Norton's.
I run Spyware Doctor,Norton's and Registry Mechanic on XP service pack 2

Based on first hand experience, I can say that it is sound advice to supplement one's anti-virus with software intended to handle spyware/malware.
Anti-virus software is not really designed to deal with spyware/malware. I was not aware of this until several weeks ago, when I had occasion to consult with someone who is intimately familiar with the inner workings of the leading anti-virus software.

Dell once told me about Antvir. Do a google search for it. I barely use the Dell now I'm almost strictly a mac guy, but it's been about 4-5 yrs and that Dell hasn't had an issue.

There's another good piece of advice in this article in terms of using Mozilla Firefox as your Internet browser, or at least having it installed. Many of the malware programs prevent you for using Internet Explorer to access the Internet, which prevents you from getting software that can help you resolve the problem. I recently had this happen to me. While I was not able to access the Internet using Internet Explorer, I was able to do so using Firefox. That enabled me to get the assistance that I needed to resolve the situation.

I always use Firefox instead of IE. A lot less problems. I also use SuperAntiSpyware. It works well and is free.

Get all of your important information onto a hard drive and then switch over to a Mac. I was a diehard PC fan for too many years. Then, three years ago, I switched to a Mac and have never been happier with my computer.
Of course, with your current situation, I would recommend Webroot software as well. VERY GOOD (though not free) with spyware/malware/adware. [ December 31, 2009, 12:45 AM: Message edited by: bossy22 ]

Not sure if i got the info I was looking for here.
I want to run a diagnostic on my system to see if I have any viruses.
What is the best FREE program to use to check out my operating system?

Try www.avg.com, i am using that on Winblows operating systems.
If you really want to stay away from problems, buy a Macintosh or install Linux on your pc.

Free download of AVG version 9.0 from Cnet.com, couldn't be happier with it.
